Questions about Prom Dress Shopping?

This is probably going to sound stupid, but tomorrow me and my friend are going shopping for our prom dresses. This is the first time I’ve ever been shopping for a formal dress. What do I need to know so I don’t do anything stupid?

What are usual return policies for formal dresses? Do you just take dresses off racks? How does that work? Do you need to tell the store workers what you’re taking into the dressing room? Can you ask them to hold dresses for you? Anything else?
Oh, also any recommendations on if I should get a shorter dress (knee length) or long. I love both kinds! Pros/cons?

Wear clothes that you can change into and out of easily. It’s helpful if you can wear a supportive strapless bra so you can see what you’re really going to look like in a dress without your underwear getting in the way. Wear shoes that are easy to get on and off.

Personally I have a big butt, so I didn’t realize that I would have to put formal dresses on over my head in order for them to fit correctly at the top. So I’m sure I look silly in a dressing room pulling the whole darn skirt down around my neck, but otherwise I am not going to get into the thing.

All of your other questions depend on what store you are shopping in. If you are in a department store or a store in the mall, usually you just take the dresses you like off of the rack and to the dressing room. There may be an attendant that you count how many items you have for and they check you into a room. Most stores have some kind of hold policy on how long you can hold an item.

If you put a dress on hold in a store and find one at a different place that you are actually going to buy, it is polite to go back to the first store (or call) and let them know you don’t need the dress. This way the dress is available for someone else who may love it.

If you are in a boutique, like a store that specializes in formal wear, just ask the sales people for help. They should have plenty of experience helping girls find the right dress and should be able to guide you through their fitting process.

The most important things you can do to be ready are dress comfortably and be polite to the sales people who offer to help you. Those two things should make the day easy and fun.

EDIT: I have never seen a short prom dress that was as glamorous as a long one. When I think formal, I think floor length. After all, how often are you going to get to wear a big gorgeous gown?

But it’s not my prom dress. So try on both options and see which you really love the most.

Your prom dress should be something that you slip on, look in the mirror, and go “THIS IS THE ONE” Don’t settle for less than that if you can possibly help it. You’ll know the right dress when you try it on.
