Amateur Baseball … Can you honestly compare Mickey Cochran, Yogi Berra and Carlton Fisk ..?
Mickey Cochran trapped behind the plate in the late 1920s through the 1930s for the Philadelphia Athletics and Detroit Tigers. Yogi Berra caught behind the plate during the "squeeze a button-60 team 1950's, the New York Yankees. Carlton Fisk … more durable receiver Baseball with 24 years behind the plate, Carlton "Pudge" Fisk caught more games (2,226) than any other player in history. Fisk played for the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox from 1968 to 1993. Could make an argument to have one, or none, capable of stepping into the shoes of the other two? Who would be the most liquid of all three? … Or that Johnny Bench (Cincinnati Reds from 1967 to 1983) Catch-be able to move players around and talk to the pitchers better than any of those three? your choice … If possible?
As a Yankee fan for life time would be easy for me to pick Yogi. It has more hardware than all others combined, but it is a product as a member of a strong team and latent talent. It was a very solid catcher and intelligent. I second list. Mickey Cochran I have no opinion. I never saw him play and only I know the father of Mickey Mantle in such high esteem in which he named his son after him. Carlton Fisk was a pleasure to watch grow. He was an outstanding receiver and game calls that seemed to have a positive response when over unless it was to win it all only to prolong the agony he went to the Red Sox. He gave them hope so that you can be snatched back the next day. I would vote him # 3. Johnny Bench. What more can you say that was the best I've seen. He was also surrounded by a team talented they all refer to as the Big Red Machine. It was exciting to watch and similar forms of Pete (The player) Rose and Joe Morgan and many others who went to a Dynasty little. I just wish that Thurman Munson had not died in the accident. He and Johnny had a little thing going and Thurman had a lot of skill, they can never know how much. Bank is # 1 on this list. John
