I’ve never been to an anime convention before. but i know its alot of fun and stuff…
i would like to go during my junior year of college, so any advice?
are there any benefit of attending dressed in cosplay?
how much do you typically spend there?
any conventions near NYC coming up?
how much to buy tickets (besides side money) and how long are the lines?
cat ears =3 ?
good food and stuff? (but no seafood. im allergic)
hotel rentals and waking up at certain hours?
so thats about it, because i’ve been hearing alot about these, so i REALLY want to check it out =)
You can’t call yourself an anime/manga fan until you have done at least one con. My cosplay is always Ikari Gendo…and my wife is Belldandy.
I love conventions. My wife has industry connections, so we get to have even more fun…like meeting Ishida Yoko at Animelo Summer a few years back. Anyway, here are some of my answers to your questions:
are there any benefit of attending dressed in cosplay? In the US it is fun…in Japan, it is considered something only done by professional cosplayers. There are no special benefits.
how much do you typically spend there? Last time, I bought life-sized figures of Asuka Langley Sohryu and Rei Ayanami…which set me back around $10K. No, I am NOT kidding. This was in JP…and yes, I am crazy. BTW, the figures have doubled in value. For regular non-crazies, I would suggest bringing between $250 and $500 for goodies, and hang on to your wallet or purse…as not everyone there is otaku.
any conventions near NYC coming up? Check the web and the local geek community.
how much to buy tickets (besides side money) and how long are the lines? Depends on the con. At Comicke (Tokyo Big Sight), it is usually by invitation and scalped tickets cost a fortune. The lines are beyond rational belief. At most major US cons, the prices are usually reasonable…around $35-$50 for the whole event…lines are lines, everywhere. If a major seiyu or J-pop singer is there, expect much higher prices and longer lines.
cat ears =3 ? Lots of Neko fans out there.
good food and stuff? (but no seafood. im allergic) Stay away from any tofu or soy based products if you have allergies to them.
hotel rentals and waking up at certain hours? Depends on the con.
Anime conventions are fun in the US, but they are absolutely beyond reason in JP. Remember, good professional cosplayers can make (are you ready?) over $200,000 a year.
Every otaku owes it to him/herself to go to at least one con.
