Dress Rehearsal Poem

Love & The Lady Of The Night
Hi there! This poem is about the damned sections of society, people we might turn a blind eye to.These people live life on the fringes, thriving on our collective apathy, lack of love & hypocrisy. This poem is about a prostitute and her shortlived experience with love. It is a long poem, but I guess I have tried to put feeling into the length.Hope you like it..
She was lurking in the shadows, looking for a man Striking a pose of allure that only she can Heavily scented, face very painted Prepared to sell her soul, her morals very tainted Standing apart, in a group, all looking similar With sensuous bodies & glances come-hither Eyeing everyone, inviting their inner beast To come & partake of a carnal feast A feast of fragrance, lust & body Flesh on fire, but minds all bawdy She was the most beautiful woman of them all All dressed up, looking like a doll She makes her move on a man wealthy & strong Knowing he would succumb, not last long Making a gesture, the cheapest & the oldest Spelling out her intention, blatant & immodest
The man walks upto her, she twirls her eyes Rehearsing her routine, selling fake orgasms & lies She says to the man: I’m all your’s, just pay my price, I offer pleasure & unaccustomed highs!” With a smile surprisingly innocent, a smile so nice The man asks her to quote her price When she does quote & quote she does She says a figure as if in a rush The man then tells her “What if i pay, Pay you your price, but you don’t have to play! No need to play the game of temptation Of deceit, of lust, of wanton destruction”!
Thus speaking, he takes out a wad of money She eyes the notes, all dazzling & shiny He places the money in her warm, tingling hands She feels she’s in a dream, in faraway lands Coming real close & oh so near He touches her heart in a hushed whisper “Fate has made you a lady of the night Neglected & unloved, you are like a blight The people you have met might have shaken your faith And now you have no hope, you feel love is just a wraith But I do this, purely out of love For you are a woman, a gift from the heavens above You give birth to life, nurture & renew And I bow to that pristine woman in you”!
She’s taken aback at this unexpected twist She had always thought there would be a story, a hidden gist For the first time she feels love, not low, not immoral She feels reborn, pure & virginal Her tryst with love, alas, is soon over As he walks away, the man who would have been her lover A tear drop in waiting, then falls onto her cheek They start pouring, a river lashing a creek Angry at her life, she realizes for certain Life is unreliable, like a flickering lantern She knew this stranger was just a pleasant interlude In a life otherwise, so mocking & rude
