Clothing Fabric Types
What fabric can I use when starting my own clothing line?
I am trying to start my own clothing line and I want to start with smocked shirts and dresses. My question is can I use any type of fabric. What are the legalities with using fabric? Can I get into trouble for using a certain print? Anything helps. That is all that’s holding me back.
Licensed fabrics may cause you some issues — Disney is notorious for this. Generally, though, standard designs are fair game for any use.
You really need some basics before you start on your line. Yes, you need Kathleen’s book. Since you mention smocking, I’m guessing you are thinking of kids clothes… be sure to search CPSIA on the fashion-incubator site, assuming you’re in the US. Also, if you’re working in California or New York, search the name of your state + law there also.
